I have become deeply invested in the craft of dahlia hybridization. In fact, it has become my favorite thing about growing dahlias. In the intense heat of Central Washington, many varieties struggle to maintain their vigor, which is why I’ve made it my mission to develop new varieties specifically bred to thrive in our local climate.
I have been dedicated to this goal for the past five years. While the early stages of this journey—particularly back in 2022—involved a steep learning curve, the quality of my seedlings has improved significantly with each successive season. I have moved past those initial trials and am now seeing much more promising results.
The Numbers Game
Hybridization is truly a test of patience and scale. Since only a small fraction of seedlings meet the high standards for form and quality, success is a game of odds: the more you plant, the better your chances of discovering a true standout.
The 2026 Season: I am planting hundreds of seeds saved directly from my garden.
Strategic Breeding: This year, I am focusing on intentional breeding by carefully curating my garden layout. By planting specific varieties and flower forms in close proximity, I can better influence the natural cross-pollination I want to see as the bees move through the patch.
